CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — June 22, 2025 — The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is set to immortalize one of its most beloved basketball icons. On September 1st, 2025, UNC will unveil a statue of Tyler Hansbrough outside the Dean E. Smith Center, celebrating the relentless spirit, leadership, and legacy of a player who redefined Tar Heel basketball.
Hansbrough, affectionately nicknamed “Psycho T” by fans and teammates, is widely regarded as one of the greatest college basketball players of all time. From 2005 to 2009, his intense energy, unmatched work ethic, and on-court dominance helped shape a golden era for North Carolina basketball under Coach Roy Williams.
A four-time All-ACC selection and the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer among players from major conferences at the time of his graduation, Hansbrough left an indelible mark on the sport. “It’s surreal,” Hansbrough said in a statement. “When I came to Chapel Hill, I just wanted to play hard and win. I never imagined something like this. It’s a huge honor, and I’m thankful to the university, my coaches, teammates, and the fans who supported me through everything.”
