BREAKING NEWS: Giants coach set to depart to develop their star pass-rushers

The New York Giants disclosed that, in an attempt to develop its top pass-rushers this season, they will be making a

significant change to their coaching staff. Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports that Andre Patterson, the defensive

line coach for the Giants, informed reporters that this season he will not only be training the interior defensive

lineman but also the edge rushers.

DL Coach Andre Patterson will train the outside linebackers in 2024

The new coaching scheme for edge rushers and defensive linemen, according to Patterson, is a “huge change.” The

Giants’ pass-rushing strategy will be significantly different under new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, who will

rely more on a four-man rush than Wink Martindale’s inventive blitz packages.

For the previous two seasons, Patterson only worked with the defensive linemen while Martindale served as the

defensive coordinator. He was not required to cross-train with the outside linebackers under Martindale. Patterson

will train concurrently with both position groups this season:

“I’m working with those outside linebackers on pass rush,” Patterson told reporters (h/t Big Blue View). “…I do have

a little history of helping those guys, so it’s been good. It’s been good for me to visit with those guys and let them see

how I think it should be done. Guys that I’ve had in the past that weren’t high draft picks or whatever became Pro

Bowl players as rushers in this league, so it’s been good to spend some time with those guys.”

In the past, Patterson has helped players grow into extraordinary talents. Danielle Hunter was one such player

during his tenure with the Minnesota Vikings. From 2014 until 2021, Patterson served as the defensive line coach for

the Vikings, among other roles. Hunter, who has five double-digit sack seasons under his belt and is currently a

three-time Pro Bowler, benefited from his progress.

Patterson is also credited for helping Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, an All-Pro selection. Although

Patterson was not an outstanding player, Lawrence was a good player when Big Blue hired him in 2022. Lawrence

has been one of the NFL’s greatest defensive players ever since Patterson took over as his coach, earning a spot on

the second team of the All-Pro selection two seasons in a row.
