  • Michael Van Buren Jr. Expresses Regret Over LSU Transfer, Announces Departure Following 2025 Season

In a surprising turn of events, Michael Van Buren Jr., the former Mississippi State quarterback who transferred to LSU ahead of the 2025 season, has announced his decision to depart from the program after the upcoming season. Van Buren, who entered LSU with high hopes of solidifying his collegiate career, cited personal and professional reasons for his regret and decision to seek new opportunities elsewhere.

Van Buren’s transfer to LSU came after a promising freshman season at Mississippi State. During his time there, he started eight games, completing 140 of 256 passes for 1,886 yards, 11 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, while showcasing his mobility with five rushing touchdowns. His move to LSU was seen as a significant addition to a quarterback room already featuring standout Garrett Nussmeier and former Vanderbilt transfer AJ Swann.

However, sources close to Van Buren have suggested that the competitive environment at LSU and limited opportunities for consistent starting time may have played a role in his dissatisfaction. Additionally, adjustments to a new coaching staff and offensive system reportedly contributed to his struggles in finding his footing.

Van Buren expressed gratitude toward the LSU program, its coaches, and fans in his announcement but emphasized the importance of finding a program where he could fully realize his potential. “I’m thankful for the opportunity LSU gave me, but I believe my journey lies elsewhere,” Van Buren said in a statement.

With his departure planned after the 2025 season, Van Buren enters a growing list of players seeking to navigate the transfer portal in search of the ideal fit. His next steps will be closely watched, as he remains a talented quarterback with significant upside.
