In a candid interview following his team’s latest training session, Manchester United striker Rasmus Højlund has admitted that adjusting to new manager Ruben Amorim’s tactics has been a challenging process. The 20-year-old Danish forward described the tactical demands as “a lot to take in,” but expressed confidence that the team is on the right track under the Portuguese coach.
Amorim, known for his innovative and possession-oriented style, was appointed to replace Erik ten Hag last month after a string of poor results left United languishing in the league standings. The former Sporting CP manager has quickly implemented a new system centered around fluid movement, high pressing, and positional play — a stark contrast to the more structured approach of his predecessor.
“It’s definitely a big shift,” Højlund said. “The way he wants us to play is so detailed. Every movement, every decision, it all has to fit into the bigger plan. It’s a lot to take in, especially so quickly, but I think it’s starting to click.”
Højlund, who joined United in the summer in a deal worth £72 million, has been a key figure in Amorim’s plans. The young striker’s work rate and tactical intelligence make him well-suited to Amorim’s high-intensity system, but he acknowledged the learning curve has been steep.
“There’s a lot of information coming at us in training, but the staff have been great at breaking it down,” he continued. “I think we all understand that it’s going to take time. You don’t perfect a new style overnight, but you can see already how it’s starting to improve our play.”
Amorim, 39, is widely regarded as one of Europe’s brightest young managers, having led Sporting CP to a Portuguese league title in 2021. His appointment has generated optimism among fans, though the pressure to deliver results at a club of United’s stature is immense.
The Red Devils’ next test comes in the Premier League this weekend, with a tricky away fixture against a resurgent Brighton side. Despite the challenges, Højlund remains optimistic.
“We all believe in what the manager is trying to do,” he said. “It’s a process, but if we stick with it and keep working, I think we can achieve something special.”
United supporters will hope that Amorim’s tactical overhaul will yield results sooner rather than later, as the club looks to regain its footing in domestic and European competitions.
