In a move that’s sending shockwaves through the St. Louis fan base, Cardinals General Manager John Mozeliak has confirmed the unexpected trade of elite closer Ryan Helsley to the Philadelphia Phillies. Seen as a foundational part of the bullpen and a critical piece of the team’s success blueprint for 2025, Helsley’s exit marks a major blow to a Cardinals squad already trying to find its rhythm.
“This is one of the hardest decisions we’ve had to make,” Mozeliak said following the announcement. “Ryan has been a huge part of our identity. But we had to consider the long-term flexibility and opportunity this move creates.”
The deal comes as the Cardinals sit fourth in the NL Central with a 12–15 record, still within reach of first place in a division lacking a dominant frontrunner. Despite that, the front office has opted to part ways with one of the league’s premier closers—a decision that suggests a shift in strategy or deeper concerns about this roster’s postseason viability.

Helsley has been lights-out in 2025, giving up just four earned runs and recording four saves in 10 appearances. His fastball routinely hits 100 mph, and his presence on the mound was often seen as a late-inning safety net for St. Louis.
For Philadelphia, the trade is a clear win. The Phillies, currently second in the NL East behind the surging Mets, now add an elite weapon to a bullpen in need of depth and experience.
While the full trade package remains undisclosed, reports suggest that St. Louis did not receive any of Philadelphia’s top prospects—adding to the sense of frustration among Cardinals fans.
Helsley’s sudden departure leaves a noticeable void in St. Louis—and raises pressing questions about the team’s direction as the season moves forward.
