The Chicago Cubs have made a major roster move as their strong start to the 2025 season continues, officially calling up top catching prospect Moisés Ballesteros from Triple-A Iowa.
The 21-year-old phenom, known to fans as “Mo Baller,” has been tearing up Triple-A pitching, slashing .402/.459/.619 with a 1.078 OPS over 24 games. With the Cubs leading the NL Central at 18-12 and generating postseason buzz, the front office decided now was the time to add another dangerous bat to the lineup.
Ballesteros, the Cubs’ No. 4 overall prospect, signed with the organization in 2021 and has quickly risen through the ranks thanks to his advanced hitting ability and raw power. His promotion marks a major milestone for the young catcher, who just last year split time between Double-A and Triple-A.
The decision to bring him up comes despite solid performances from veterans Carson Kelly and Miguel Amaya, who had stabilized the catching position. Kelly has posted a scorching 1.415 OPS in 16 starts, while Amaya has been reliable with a .796 OPS. But with Kelly’s hot streak expected to cool and Amaya still developing consistency, the Cubs now appear ready to give Ballesteros a look at the major league level.

“Mo has earned this,” said Cubs manager Craig Counsell. “He’s shown he can handle advanced pitching, and we believe adding his bat gives us another edge. He’s still developing defensively, but he’ll get every opportunity to grow with us.”
While Ballesteros’ glove still lags behind his bat, Cubs officials are confident that the major league environment will accelerate his growth behind the plate. His blocking and framing are works in progress, but his maturity and leadership are already drawing praise.
Ballesteros will make his debut later this week at Wrigley Field, with fans eager to see if “Mo Baller” can live up to the hype on baseball’s biggest stage.
