k-state news: Wildcats Set for Big 12 Showdown with Mountaineers Under the Waco Lights

The Kansas State women’s tennis team is gearing up for postseason play as the No. 10 seed in the 2025 Big 12 Championship, opening the tournament against No. 15 seed West Virginia on Wednesday, April 16. The match is set for 6 p.m. CT at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas, with tournament hosting duties handled by Baylor University.

Currently ranked No. 62 nationally, K-State (9-11, 6-7 Big 12) will look to advance to the second round, where No. 7 seed BYU (17-9, 7-6 Big 12) awaits the winner on Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m. CT. All championship matches will be streamed live on ESPN+.

Familiar Foes in First Round

The Wildcats and Mountaineers already squared off once this season, with K-State narrowly defeating WVU 4-3 in a tense road match on March 9 in Morgantown. That win completed K-State’s longest winning streak of the season at three matches.

In that match, Charlotte Keitel, Maria Santos, and Veronika Kulhava delivered dominant straight-set victories, while Maralgoo Chogsomjav battled through three sets for a crucial point. The two teams last met in the Big 12 postseason back in 2019, where K-State swept WVU 4-0 to move on to the quarterfinals.

Momentum and Milestones

K-State enters the tournament looking to notch back-to-back seasons with double-digit wins, having finished 12-12 last year. Their six conference victories this spring mark the program’s highest Big 12 win total in a single season, topping last year’s four.

While the team dropped its final two regular season matches—falling to then-ranked No. 65 Iowa State (1-4) and No. 39 Kansas (0-4)—sophomore Maralgoo Chogsomjav stood out with a three-set singles win against Iowa State’s No. 119 Anna Supapitch Kuearum, improving her personal record to 8-2 in three-set matches, including 5-0 in conference play.

West Virginia Outlook

West Virginia (8-16, 2-11 Big 12) finished the regular season on a 1-2 note, suffering losses to No. 15 Texas Tech and Colorado at home before closing with a 4-2 road win over Cincinnati. The Mountaineers are seeking their first Big 12 tournament win since 2017.

What’s Next

A win over West Virginia would send K-State to a second-round clash with BYU, who enters the tournament as the No. 7 seed after an impressive 17-win season. The Wildcats are seeking their first quarterfinal appearance since 2022.
