Major Blow: Reds Confirm The Unexpected Departure Of $21 Million Swingman

The Los Angeles Dodgers are facing mounting concerns in their starting rotation, with no clear timetable for ace Blake Snell’s return and new injury issues arising for Tyler Glasnow.

Despite the setbacks, the team maintains a strong 18-10 record and holds second place in the NL West, with other reliable pitchers like Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Dustin May, and Roki Sasaki available.

However, if either Snell or Glasnow is sidelined for an extended period, the Dodgers might be prompted to explore trade options to strengthen their rotation.

On Thursday, Newsweek’s Zach Pressnell suggested the Cincinnati Reds as a potential trade partner, given their pitching depth. The Reds’ current rotation includes Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo, Brady Singer, Andrew Abbott, and Nick Martinez, with Rhett Lowder nearing a return from the IL.

In Pressnell’s proposed deal, Martinez would head to Los Angeles in exchange for a promising prospect—possibly outfielder James Outman or catcher/outfielder Dalton Rushing. According to Pressnell, acquiring either would significantly bolster the Reds’ thin outfield depth.

Martinez, an eight-year MLB veteran, could temporarily fill a starting role in Los Angeles and later shift to a bullpen or swingman position once Snell or Glasnow returns.

While his current ERA sits at a high 5.40 with a modest 20% strikeout rate, he performed well in 2024 with a 141 ERA+. Outman, who hit 23 homers two years ago but started this season in Triple-A, and Rushing, the Dodgers’ No. 2 prospect with a .294 average and .883 OPS at Triple-A, are both nearing MLB readiness.
