As South Carolina football nears the end of its spring practice period, the program is making final preparations for its annual Garnet and Black spring game, scheduled for Thursday, April 18, at 7:00 p.m. EST inside Williams-Brice Stadium.
While the Gamecocks have been focused on development and competition ahead of the 2025 season, the spring transfer portal has begun to shape the roster in its own way.
The spring is traditionally a critical time for player evaluation — not just for coaches, but for the athletes themselves. For new arrivals, it’s an opportunity to acclimate to the team’s culture and systems. For returners, it’s a chance to solidify a spot on the depth chart or consider a change in scenery.
Although South Carolina has been fortunate in avoiding mass departures through the portal this offseason, the team saw its second player make the move this week.
According to recruiting insider @Hayesfawcett3, former 4-star recruit and defensive back Emory Floyd has officially announced his plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. Floyd’s departure follows that of EDGE rusher Wendell Gregory, who entered the portal earlier in the spring.

Floyd, a member of the 2022 recruiting class, came to Columbia with high expectations. The Georgia native was praised for his elite speed, size, and potential in the secondary.
However, his career with the Gamecocks never quite gained momentum. In his freshman year, Floyd redshirted after playing sparingly in just two games — Georgia State and Georgia — and did not record any official statistics. Despite limited time on the field, he earned a place on the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll, showcasing his dedication off the field.
His redshirt freshman season in 2023 showed flashes of potential. Floyd saw action in three games — against Furman, Mississippi State, and Kentucky — and managed to register two tackles and a pass breakup.
Unfortunately, his development was hampered once again last season, this time by a nagging hamstring injury that limited him to only two appearances, against Katron and Ole Miss. In those contests, Floyd once again went without recording any stats.
In addition to his time on the football field, Floyd was a dual-sport athlete, competing for the South Carolina track and field team.
He participated in sprint events, including the 60-meter dash indoors and both the 100m and 200m outdoors, showcasing the same elite speed that made him a sought-after prospect during his recruitment.
Floyd’s decision to enter the portal marks a fresh chapter for a player who still holds a great deal of upside and athleticism. While his time at South Carolina may not have panned out as initially hoped, a new opportunity elsewhere could provide the spark he needs to fully realize his potential at the collegiate level.
For the Gamecocks, Floyd’s departure slightly thins out the safety and cornerback depth, but the team remains in strong position.
South Carolina returns a young, talented group in the secondary, with players eager to step into larger roles as the program continues to build under Shane Beamer’s leadership. The coaching staff has also been active on the recruiting trail and in the transfer market, positioning the team to maintain its defensive identity heading into the 2025 season.
As the spring game approaches, all eyes will be on how the depth chart continues to evolve — and whether any further portal entries or surprise performances might shake things up ahead of fall camp.
