As the Cincinnati Reds aim to find consistency early in the 2025 MLB season, one player is quickly gaining attention: Rece Hinds. The 23-year-old power-hitting outfielder is emerging as a key figure in the Reds’ quest to address their offensive challenges. With impressive performances in both the minors and a brief MLB stint, Hinds is becoming a strong candidate for a breakout season at the highest level.
Currently sitting two games below .500, the Reds are struggling to gain momentum, and their offense remains a major point of concern.
Although they rank fifth in the league for total runs scored (123), their offensive numbers paint a more complicated picture. They are 11th in home runs (27), 12th in hits (194), and 10th in team OPS (.716). With a league-average batting average of .242 and an OPS+ of just 95, the Reds have struggled, particularly in close games, where timely hitting has been elusive. This is where a player like Hinds could make a significant impact.
Rece Hinds: A Rising Star
Selected in the second round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of IMG Academy, Hinds was known for his raw power and athleticism. Since joining the Reds’ organization, he has lived up to the hype, hitting 65 home runs across the minors, including an impressive 2023 season with the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts, where he belted 22 home runs and drove in 98 RBIs.
Although Hinds is still working on refining his game—particularly reducing his strikeout rate, which stood at 38% in Triple-A during the 2024 season—he has continued to impress. In his 2024 major league stint, he posted a .261 batting average, with five home runs and 11 RBIs in just 51 at-bats. His .717 slugging percentage during that stretch showcased his elite power potential when he’s locked in at the plate.
This season with the Triple-A Louisville Bats, Hinds is maintaining his impressive power. In 80 at-bats, he is hitting .238 with 19 RBIs—leading the team—and has hit four home runs, tying for the team lead. His BABIP of .319 and eight extra-base hits suggest he’s making solid contact when he connects. Additionally, Hinds has shown his speed, stealing 10 bases, showcasing a rare power-speed combination.
Defensively, Hinds has also shown promise. With a 2.2 range rating and an ultimate zone rating of 11.3 per 150 games, he’s proven to be more than just a power hitter. His ability to cover ground and make athletic plays in the outfield adds another dimension to his game.
As the Reds continue to search for ways to ignite their offense, Hinds is positioning himself not only as a future star but potentially a cornerstone of the team. If he can continue to improve his plate discipline and translate his tools to the big leagues, Rece Hinds may soon become the Reds’ next breakout star—and a fan favorite for years to come.
